If you enjoy quaint villages or modern towns, breathtaking mountain views, and food of pretty much any kind, Switzerland has an adventure waiting for you.
Spend the the first full day of your adventure exploring walkable Zurich and its old town. head down through the financial district, home of the famous Swiss banks and all the exclusive shopping that goes along with it. Old town awaits a few blocks further. Enjoy winding lanes, climb a tower and get a birds eye view of the city, try a delicacy at one of the many restaurants.
Enjoy the Jungfrau region and Grindelwald with it's mountain coasters, hiking and skiing. If you'd like a quieter experience, head to the other side of the mountain and take a gondola up to Muren or the tiny hamlet of Gimmelwald (hello Rick Steves fans!). Enjoy the pastoral setting and local swiss cheese. You may even get to see the farmers moving their cattle up to higher ground with their traditional bells on. What waits for you here? Hiking, waterfalls, waterfalls and more waterfalls, canyoning, a world-class via Ferrata course and beautiful views from the mountaintop.
This instantly recognizable mountain sits over the town of Zermatt, home of early Alpine explorers and a wonderful destination. Enjoy the view as you explore the town, hike out to one of the world's longest suspension bridges or take a Gondola up for a close-up view of that famous peak. Close to the Italian border of Switzerland, don't be surprised if many of the Swiss you find here speak Italian. You will find not only Swiss staples of fondue and rasti, but also Italian cuisine.
After all those days of hiking around in the mountains, you won't be tired of the view, but you may be tired! Hop on the Glacier Express and enjoy an 8-hour expedition that will take you from Zermatt north to St Moritz. The Glacier Express glass roofed cars and slower speed allow you to continue to soak in the sights and enjoy and slower-paced day.
Guests from all over the world appreciate the modern Alpine lifestyle, characterised by top-class restaurants that can satisfy gourmet demands even by the side of the slopes, hotels that set standards in every category, and events of international calibre. The Via Serlas guarantees great shopping in a small space, though you can also find local specialities like the famous Engadine nut tart just around the corner. Sights such as the leaning tower, a remnant of the Mauritius Church from around 1500, or the Segantini Museum, offer a change from the life of luxury and the jet set.
Take the train from St. Moritz to Appenzell. The village of Appenzell and the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden are situated in a singularly beautiful landscape of rolling hills. The region is known for rural customs and traditions such as the ceremonial descent of the cattle in autumn and cultural events such as folk music and rustic dances, as well as hiking tours in the Alpstein region. Appenzell benefits from a particularly dense network of rambling trails, including ‘experience trails’ such as the barefoot trail near Gonten, a trail which enables you to experience nature, and the circular chapel trails. On day 12, take the train back to Zurich until it is time to depart for home.
